The Skill Passport: a first look at verified professional identity
Certificates are static. They say something happened. The Skill Passport is designed to say something is true, and to keep updating that truth as a learner grows.
What the Skill Passport is trying to be
- A learner-owned professional identity, not a platform-owned badge.
- A structured skill graph—mapped to real capabilities, not marketing themes.
- A record of verified performance, not viewing time.
- An evolving profile that reflects growth from Beginner → Intermediate → Professional.
How signals flow into it
Every verified activity a learner completes contributes signals to the Skill Passport: an adaptive assessment, a submitted assignment reviewed by AI and educator, a project graded against clear rubrics. Signals are aggregated at the skill level, not the course level, so “JavaScript” in the Skill Passport actually means something.
From “I learned it” to “I can prove it.”
Why portability matters
A record of skill that a learner cannot carry is not really their record. We are designing the Skill Passport so that learners can share it, present it and evolve it across their whole career—regardless of where they learned each piece.
The Skill Passport is currently labelled PLANNED. Design and architecture are actively underway. Availability and exact feature scope will be announced closer to launch.
